Down Syndrome is an unplanned journey😢
What is Down Syndrome?
It is a condition in which a child is born with an extra copy of their 21st
chromosome and its other name is trisomy 21. This cause physical and mental
development delays and disabilities. Many of the disabilities are lifelong and
they can also shorten life expectancy.
Do you know that older women have a higher chance of having
a child with Down Syndrome? Since
many couples are postponing parenting until later in life, the incidence of
Down Syndrome conceptions is expected to increase. A 35-year-old woman has
about a one in 350 chances of conceiving a child with Down Syndrome and this
chance increases gradually to 1 in 100 by age 40. At age 45 the incidence
becomes approximately 1 in 30.
People with Down Syndrome tend to have certain physical
features in common. For example, they often have flat noses and small ears.
Their mental abilities will vary, but most have mild to moderate issues with
thinking, reasoning and understanding. They take longer time to reach important
goals like walking, talking and developing social skills.
